December 20, 2022 -- Rolluda Architects and their recent Filipino Community Village project won second place in the Affordable Housing Architecture & Design Awards. The awards are annually hosted by Senior Housing News (SHN) and present 15 categories including Affordable Housing, Assisted Living, International, and Hospice. In 2019, Rolluda Architects partnered with HumanGood, Beacon Development, and the Filipino Community of Seattle to create a master plan for Filipino Community Village, a mixed-use development in the neighborhood of Othello in Seattle, Washington. Filipino Community Village has 95 apartments for seniors 55+ earning low incomes, an Innovation Learning Center for youth, and a small parking lot, and opened its doors to residents in 2021. The project totaled $24.1M.
“This project hit home and my heart,” said Alex Rolluda, President of Rolluda Architects. “The adjacent Filipino Community Center was frequented by my parents back in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Everyone there was our Tito or Tita (uncle or aunt), we felt safe and at home.” Rolluda explained that coming full circle and designing the senior community for aging family members, as well as the Innovative Learning Center for youth, was a dream come true in his career.
Recently, HumanGood and Filipino Community Village released a multi-award-winning documentary about the building’s cultural mural, painted by internationally renowned Filipino artist Eliseo Art Silva. “To be able to incorporate Filipino character and culture into the project and create a canvas for the amazing four-panel mural made the project unique and special,” said Rolluda.
Please join HumanGood in congratulating Rolluda Architects on their recent SHN Award.
