October 6, 2022 -- HumanGood has become the new management organization for Sojourner Truth Manor in North Oakland. The affordable housing community consists of 88 studio and one-bedroom apartments across three separate buildings and is fully subsidized by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
It is owned by Sojourner Truth Housing, Inc., and will add to HumanGood’s Northern California presence as the fifth managed community in Oakland. HumanGood VP of Operations Kendra Roberts is eager “to bring intentional management and resident services to another community” in the area. “Our impact continues to increase throughout the East Bay. We are excited to bring the HumanGood values, passion and expertise to serve the residents,” she says.
Sojourner Truth Housing, Inc. has a rich history of inclusion and minority leadership. In 1971, it became the first corporation in the country founded by African American women to develop and break ground on a HUD senior housing project. Sojourner Truth Manor was completed in 1976.
HumanGood’s management contract began October 1, 2022, with goals to bring more activities and updated features to the community, including completion on a renovation project that began in 2017.
“HumanGood welcomes Sojourner Truth Manor into the HumanGood family of 100+ affordable housing communities strong,” said Jennifer Kappen, HumanGood’s Senior Vice President of Affordable Housing. “We are grateful for the opportunity to work with the Sojourner Truth Manor board as we begin providing management services to the community and making a positive impact in the city of Oakland.”
This new partnership will intend to provide low-income seniors 62 years and older in Northern California with modernized, comfortable homes and enable their best lives possible.
