December 16, 2022 -- The Terraces of Los Gatos (TLG) recently held a hat drive in support of Recovery Café San Jose. Recovery Café San Jose is a healing community for people traumatized by addiction, homelessness, and mental health challenges, and is part of the Recovery Café network which has more than 50 such communities across the country.
Residents, team members and others collected 166 new (purchased or hand-knit) stocking caps to ensure all members of Recovery Café had a warm hat for the winter. Cindy McCalmont, TLG’s spiritual care director, initiated the plan and worked with the community and Recovery Café to make this happen. A group of residents delivered the hats to the Café and met with three Café members who spoke about their recovery. The most moving moment was when residents and Café members realized that they shared a common challenge with stigma—the stigma related to addiction/mental illness/homelessness and the stigma related to aging.
“It was a great community effort for a wonderful cause” said Cindy.” It was incredible to see so many community members engaged…it became very common to see residents in the dining room or meetings knitting away to create some truly beautiful hats.”
Thank you to the residents and team members for their support of this worthwhile cause.
