The city of Los Gatos unveiled a new memorial on June 15 to commemorate those who have served the country and first responders.

Resident Barbara Squires, who served in the Women’s Airforce Pilots Service, was one of five World War II veterans honored during the dedication ceremony.

Known as the Flame of Liberty, the new memorial is located in the redwood grove area on the Civic Center’s front lawn. Support for the memorial had been underway since 2012. That included three residents at the Terraces—Bart Raynaud, Bob Sturdivant and Paul Barrish—joining nearly two dozen Los Gatos community members in late 2017 to share their support before the town council which ultimately voted in favor of the plan.
