At a young age, Redwood Terrace resident Joyce Hartman knew she wanted to teach. She started her teaching career in 1953, teaching English as a second language to teens in Japan, and after more than 40 years spent in a classroom, her passion to teach has continued on in her retirement.

Hartman now volunteers her time teaching English as a second language on Monday mornings at the Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church in San Diego. She says it’s very rewarding for her to see the difference she’s making in the lives of her new students.

“It never gets old,” Hartman said in an interview with the San Diego Union-Tribune. “When it dawns on them that they know what you’re saying, they get so excited. It’s really fun and rewarding to watch.”
