Judson Park Chaplain, Rev. Barb Reid, gained valuable insights about caring for people with dementia at Discovery 2016 sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association.
Caring for family members with dementia comes with unique challenges and blessings. Watching a loved one change as the dementia progresses brings sadness, increased responsibility and difficult decisions about care. Often individuals can fall into solely focusing on what is being lost.
After attending Discovery 2016, Rev. Barb suggests that individuals see the their loved one with dementia as a whole spirit going through a handicapping experience instead. As a whole spirit, he /she can touch their spirits, and we can touch theirs regardless of what else they can no longer do. No matter what stage of dementia people are in, they’re lovable. Be encouraged!
