Valle Verde’s Award-Winning Green Program

Written by HumanGood | Jan 05, 2016

As we begin 2016, all of us at Valle Verde would like to take a minute to reflect on all the wonderful ways our community has continued to expand our green efforts across campus. Over the past several years, Valle Verde has implemented and a “Green Footprint” program designed to decrease waste, reduce the use of electricity and improve air quality. Valle Verde’s Green Footprint program has evolved to include a variety of energy-saving methods. A few of these methods include:

  • using solar coils to heat the pool
  • installing solar tubes and high performance windows to increase day-lighting and improve energy efficiency
  • upgrading to low-flow shower heads and toilets
  • reclaimed water use for all irrigation
  • 9.8 acre oak woodland preserve on campus
  • recycling of old appliances
  • donating used computers to local schools
  • purchasing produce from local farmers
  • team members using electric golf carts to move around the campus
  • using non-toxic cleaning supplies in common areas

Due to all these efforts, and many more, Valle Verde has earned numerous awards. A few of these awards include:

  • Santa Barbara City Spirit of Service Award: 2014
  • Best of Santa Barbara Independent Readers Poll: 2012, 2013
  • News Press Reader’s Choice Award: 2012, 2013
  • Steven M. Garner Social Accountability Award
  • International Council on Active Aging Green Award

  • NAHB 50+ Housing Council’s Gold Achievement Award
  • California EPA WRAP Award – 4 years in a row
  • Santa Barbara City Solar Ward – 2 years in a row
