White Sands La Jolla recently was nominated for the 43rd annual Orchids and Onions awards by the San Diego Architectural Foundation.
The La Jolla community was among more than 100 San Diego-based architectural projects recognized by the Foundation. The awards were created by the Foundation to identify those architecture projects that add character to the surrounding community, which are labeled as an “Orchid.” And for those projects that missed the mark, they’re tapped to be an “Onion.”
White Sands was nominated for an Orchid because of the community’s $20 million renovation—completed with a new and reimagined community lobby, library, open-air wine bar and bistro. “We had a theme of coastal elegance, and we took that throughout (the community),” Lorraine Duran, director of buildings and grounds, told the La Jolla Village News.
Voting kicked off on Aug. 1 and will continue until the end of the month. The awards will be announced on Oct. 3.
